The KIАF-2014 Entry
Entry F-01-18, "Geeks Empire Logo," competed in category F-1 Corporate Identity. The festival results record a score of 23 for the work, with a shortlist threshold of 61. The logo did not place, and it received no awards. That same year Sponge submitted seven entries to KIАF, but none of them brought home a prize, so the Geeks Empire logo remained in the festival statistics without an award.
The Corporate Identity category selects visual identities and marks—work that must withstand the long life of a brand, not a single campaign. For the festival this is a demanding genre: a logo is judged by how memorable it is without explanation, how well it holds up when reduced to an icon, and how it performs across different media. Geeks Empire was conceived as a non-commercial portal about geek culture, a project where the mark had to be recognized by the community rather than sell a product.
The commission came to a studio led by Bohdan Hnatiuk. He founded the bureau and later became one of the creators of the Looks.fm service, which Ukrainian and Russian media discussed in 2015. The work on the portal for geeks followed the same creative line as other studio projects of that time, in which symbol and typography mattered more than decorative effects.
A Symbol Older Than the Site
In the bureau's portfolio the project appears as a chain of three works. The first was "Fundamental Symbol for Geeks Empire," created in 2013. Then, in 2014, came "Geeks Empire—a Portal for Geeks," and in 2015 the project gained "Promo Development for Geeks Empire." Thus the logo at KIАF was not a random entry but part of a long engagement with the community's brand.
The studio itself had already drawn the attention of the professional community. On 5 December 2013, Sponge received an Honorable Mention on Awwwards, the international platform where sites are judged by a jury on design and code. On 9 February 2014, Splashnology placed the bureau 23rd in its "30 Dark Web Designs for Inspiration" roundup. In 2014, Ukrainian Design featured the studio with the Estetico.me site and the logo for "Pershyi Miskyi." For Sponge this was a period when client work and its own projects developed in parallel.
CSS Light and the CSS Winner Nomination
CSS Light is one of the web-design galleries where curators select sites and publish them with marks. The Featured of the Day mark means the site was chosen as the best on a particular day. For the Geeks Empire portal, this selection became the main recognition of its visual side, even though it concerned the site rather than the logo that failed to win at the festival in 2014. On 23 June 2015, the portal received Featured of the Day on CSS Light.
Six days later, on 29 June 2015, the project was nominated for CSS Winner, one of the best-known awards in web design. The bureau's profile on that platform by then counted 21 works, including 9 SOTD marks—"site of the day"—6 Star marks, and 6 nominations. The gaming portal Geeks Empire became one of the studio's first projects where logo, symbols, and site worked as a single system.
On 30 June 2015, the bureau published the Madonna project on Behance, and at that point Geeks Empire ceased to be the studio's main example of work for the geek community, giving way to new commissions.
