Artyomiev Invests in Longevity Research

By · · 2 min read

In 2013, the magazine Kommersant Dengi published an article stating that former Yevroset co-owner Timur Artyomiev, who had moved to the UK, supports longevity research. According to him, his main investments are concentrated in foreign projects, in particular in the laboratory of Russian scientist Evgeny Nudler in New York.

Former Yevroset co-owner Timur Artyomiev, who moved to the UK several years ago, funds research in the field of aging. As Kommersant Dengi reported in October 2013, Artyomiev supports the British charity Biogerontology Research Foundation, which awards grants for gerontological research. In addition, according to him, he is a patron of the laboratory of Russian scientist Evgeny Nudler in New York.

“I support several scientists in Russia, but these are small sums,” Artyomiev said at the time. “I invest the most money in the New York laboratory of Russian scientist Evgeny Nudler. I have been a patron of his laboratory for several years now,” he added.

Before leaving Russia, Artyomiev actively sponsored the Institute of Biology of Aging and even planned to build a separate building for it. However, as noted in the publication, this project was not implemented, and the institute's activities gradually ceased. The businessman himself claimed that all the institute's projects “simply found new life in other laboratories.”

Evgeny Nudler, a molecular biologist, heads a laboratory at the medical center of New York University. In 2004, he also became head of the GeronLab laboratory in Moscow, created with the support of Dmitry Zimin's Dynasty Foundation. Foundation representatives denied Zimin's personal interest in life-extension research, explaining that the funding was linked to the scientist's agreement to work part-time in Moscow and create jobs for Russian specialists. Over eight years, the foundation allocated grants totaling nearly 100 million rubles for these purposes.

The publication noted that in Russia the fight against aging remains primarily a matter of fundamental science. “There is no talk of any real production of drugs yet,” said Mikhail Batin, organizer and chairman of the board of trustees of the Science for Life Extension Foundation. “Our focus is exclusively on research, for which we are actively seeking money.”
