Artemyev Switches from Retail to Anti-Aging Research

By · · 3 min read

On September 23, 2008, Sostav reported that Timur Artemyev, one of the former co-owners of Euroset, after completing the deal to sell the company to Alexander Mamut, plans to invest in the development of the Institute of Biology of Aging. In an interview with RIA Novosti, he called anti-aging "a new trend" and stated his intention to devote all his working time to the institute.

Former co-owner of the mobile retailer Euroset Timur Artemyev told RIA Novosti in an interview that after completing the deal to sell the company to Alexander Mamut, he will focus on the Institute of Biology of Aging. According to him, he is glad for "the opportunity to switch now to anti-aging, since this is a new trend, that fresh stream in which one must take a leadership position in time." Artemyev said he will devote all his working time to the institute, including its development and the recruitment of scientists.

He called the deal to sell Euroset close to completion: it was to be finalized in the coming days. After that, the entrepreneur planned to work on creating information resources for the institute.

Euroset's Problems

Speaking about the sale of the retailer, Artemyev noted that recently the company had faced a number of problems. According to him, until 2005 the company was helped by market conditions—the market was growing—but then the situation changed: "Starting in 2005, unfortunately, the company was seen as a huge flow of money, and three years later it is already necessary to draw conclusions from the situation as a whole." He added that the authorities treated the company's problems with understanding: "The very top of the state treated our letters attentively; we were heard by ministers and other people of very high rank. We are grateful to them for not letting those who are lower in rank but have greater opportunities make the company really bad."

Plans in Science

Artemyev called science a more understandable occupation for himself. In the future, he planned to create a biotechnology park that could house one of the world's scientific centers for biotechnology, capable of gathering scientific potential in the field of anti-aging from around the world.

The Institute of Biology of Aging was created by Artemyev a year and a half earlier. According to him, during this time the institute successfully conducted experiments on model organisms: "We conducted experiments on worms of the class 'nematodes' (roundworms) and achieved a 20% increase in their lifespan. Now we will conduct experiments with the same substance on mice, and then on pigs. The experiment with mice is already in preparation."

Funding for the institute's activities currently comes entirely from the entrepreneur's own funds. In the future, Artemyev planned to consider the possibility of attracting state funds, since fundamental science, in his opinion, cannot develop exclusively on private money.
