Madonna by Sponge in Behance Russia's Summer Best Works Roundup

By · · 4 min read

On September 21, 2015, Sostav.ru published a review of the best summer works from the Behance Russia community. Winners were chosen by a jury separately in each of five categories, with 24 projects in total. The Madonna animation by Sponge Digital & Design was included in the Motion Design category.

The review came out at 12:50 and was dedicated to the community's best works of the summer. Behance is owned by Adobe and serves as a platform for designers' portfolios, while Behance Russia is the Russian-language community within that platform. The selection was compiled not by Behance Featured's curatorial department but by the Behance Russia jury, which chose winners separately for each category. The review included 24 projects across five categories: Branding, Illustration, Typography, Motion Design, and Interface.

In Motion Design, alongside Madonna were four other works: Sovskiye Prudy, ITOPK for Innopolis, Broadcast Pack, and People of Power. Sostav.ru did not rank the works within the category, so Madonna's place on the list is undefined. The very fact of being included in this narrow category is telling: animations of different natures stood side by side, from an urban project to a broadcast package.

The third video in the series

Madonna became the bureau's third promotional video dedicated to its Branding & Identity service. The work was published on Behance on June 30, 2015, and the studio described it as follows: “Huge work on sculpting resulted in a full-fledged animation with very ambiguous characters.” In 3D graphics, sculpting means working out volume and form before animation, so the description emphasizes the characters' plasticity rather than the plot. Sostav.ru limited itself to mentioning the title and the studio, without analyzing the project.

The video continued the animation line the bureau had developed earlier. Back in 2014, the Alien video was released on Behance: it was published on August 20 and on September 2 was featured in the Motion Graphics section, where the platform showcased works as part of Adobe Motion Graphics Served. For a studio known primarily for websites, this was a notable foray into motion and volume.

Websites, awards, and Looks.fm

The bureau's main attention in 2015 was drawn to web projects. On May 8, the studio published a case study of its new website on Behance. Between May 24 and August 14, 2015, the work received a series of SOTD (Site of the Day) marks and similar awards on CSSDA, CSS Nectar, CSS Light, CSS Winner, BestCSS, and CSSReel, as well as on Awwwards, where it was recognized on August 8. For the American version of the site, One Page Love, BestCSS, and CSSDA Special Kudos from August 14 were added. Awwwards and CSS directories are among the largest international platforms where curators evaluate websites, so such a series meant recognition beyond Ukraine.

At the same time, the name of Bohdan Hnatiuk, founder of Sponge, appeared in connection with Looks.fm. He became one of the creators of the project, which Korrespondent wrote about in blogs on February 13 and March 5, 2015. Along with Hnatiuk, Kyrylo Soliar, the project's head and product manager, and Serhii Semernov, a designer who later became the studio's Art Director, worked on Looks.fm.

What happened next

The 2015 season was not the bureau's last successful period on industry platforms. On February 4, 2016, Korrespondent published a blog about Furgoneta and CSS Light, and on the same day CSS Winner awarded SOTD to the Furgoneta website. In March of that year, CSS Winner established SOTD for Carts Guru, and on July 10, 2016, Trendon store received the mark. The Madonna animation remained in Behance Russia's summer selection, and the studio continued to release works under its own name.
