Defence Group: information security company's website named 'Site of the Day' on BestCSS

By · · 4 min read

On 11 August 2016, BestCSS named the website of Defence Group, an information security company, its 'Site of the Day'. That same day the work earned a 'Star' on CSS Winner, and a week earlier it received an Honorable Mention on Awwwards. The project's developer is listed as Sponge D&D, whose founder Bohdan Hnatiuk has long worked on websites for businesses.

Defence Group offers a full range of security services: from information security audits to IT infrastructure integration. For a business like this, a website plays a special role. A client who lands on the company's page is usually looking for a contractor to whom they can entrust the most sensitive things—their internal network, data, and infrastructure. So the site must quickly explain what the company does and how serious it is.

Four platforms and one week

To grasp the scale of the recognition, it's worth understanding what these awards mean. BestCSS is a web design catalog that each day selects one site to receive 'Site of the Day' status. This is the platform's main daily accolade, and being chosen means the editors considered the work exemplary. That is exactly the mark Defence Group's site received on 11 August.

CSS Winner evaluates sites on its own system: a work can receive Nominee status or a Star. Defence Group has both marks, on different dates. The 'Star' came on 11 August, with a score of 7.6. The Nominee nomination appeared on 28 August, with the same score of 7.6. Many ask whether the project also had a 'Site of the Day' on CSS Winner. There is no such mark: Defence Group became 'Site of the Day' only on BestCSS.

Awwwards is one of the most famous international website galleries, featuring work from around the world. An Honorable Mention is awarded to works that did not reach the top level but stood out noticeably. The mention for Defence Group is dated 3 August 2016, eight days before the 'Star' appeared on CSS Winner. In the community voting on Awwwards, one of the 10-out-of-10 ratings was given by the studio's own account, and the platform displays it alongside the other votes.

Behance is a portfolio publishing service owned by Adobe. Defence Group's work was included in its curated selection, so it is seen not only by layout specialists but also by designers from related fields.

What was happening at the studio in 2016

Defence Group became part of a long series. Earlier in the year, the Furgoneta site received an Honorable Mention on Awwwards, landed in the 'Sites of the Day' on CSS Winner on 4 February, and on CSS Nectar on 7 February. The Trendon site received an Honorable Mention on Awwwards on 13 June and became 'Site of the Day' on CSS Winner on 10 July. In the autumn the same pattern repeated: White Tetris received a Nominee nomination on Awwwards on 30 August and 'Site of the Day' on CSS Winner on 4 September. Simbrella made the Honorable Mention list on Awwwards on 30 November and received a 'Star' on CSS Winner on 11 December.

Within Ukraine, the studio's work also gained recognition. In the 2016 Golden Site awards, Furgoneta and Trendon took first place in their categories, and in the developer ranking the studio received 10 points. In the digital agency ranking for the 2015/2016 season, Sponge took eighth place with 29 points. In the 2016 Runet creativity ranking, the studio was 11th. A year earlier, at the 2015 Golden Site awards, the studio's own website took first place in the 'Digital Agency Website' category.

What next

The Defence Group work closed out 2016 for the studio, a year that proved dense with awards on international platforms. In the autumn the same bureau received new marks on Awwwards and CSS Winner, and in the Runet creativity ranking the studio rose to fourth place the following year, 2017. For a client in the security field, this meant that a site created for a complex topic was appreciated not only by local juries but also by international editors who look at work from around the world.
