Defence Group operates in information security, and its website was built around that theme. The main visual idea is simple: a dark background where neon accents act as alarm signals and serve as guides for the eye. This aesthetic has long been a recognizable hallmark of cyber defense in film, games, and advertising, and designers often adopt it as a ready-made language. Here it was used without excessive theatricality, preserving text readability and a clear page structure.
The site entered Sponge's portfolio as a 2016 work titled "Website for cybersecurity company Defence Group." By then, the studio had been working in web design and interfaces for over a decade according to various external sources, and its own website and Behance profile had been maintained since 2013. It was there, in the spongedigital profile, that case studies accumulated, and the platform's curator tags became one of the main ways the studio showcased its work to a wide audience.
Summer Awards
The project received its first recognition in the summer. On August 3, 2016, it was awarded an Honorable Mention on Awwwards. That competition, founded in the 2000s, evaluates sites on design, usability, code, and creativity, and an Honorable Mention is considered an honorary mention without first place. Then, on August 11, the project received a star on CSS Winner. This is a community mark where works are published with Star, Nominee, and Site of the Day labels, and decisions are made based on a set of criteria related to layout and design.
The project description also states that on August 11 the site received Site of the Day on BestCSS, another catalog of the best works in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. However, in Defence Group's profile on CSS Winner, the project has two entries: Star from August 11, 2016, and Nominee from August 28. There is no Site of the Day mark for this site on CSS Winner. Therefore, in the list of awards on that platform, the site appears in the Star and Nominee categories, while the separate BestCSS mark remains in the project description without confirmation on CSS Winner itself.
Behance and Audience Attention
Behance is owned by Adobe and serves as a platform where designers publish their work, and the platform's editors select the best for themed galleries. Being featured in the User Interface gallery means the work was noticed by curators specifically as an interface, not as an advertising layout or illustration. The September 24, 2016 tag gathered 794 appreciations and 5,744 views. For the professional community, such numbers indicate genuine interest in the work, especially considering it is a website for a narrow industry.
The project description on Behance links to the English version of the company's website. This is typical for studios that work with foreign clients and target an international audience: the English-language site is accessible to any reviewer, and Behance in this case serves as a showcase for the entire market.
The fate of this tag is clear: on September 24, 2016, it appeared in the gallery and remained there, alongside other works on the platform, and the project description still directs visitors to the Defence Group website.
