GlobalNet, a Russian telecom operator providing services to carriers and corporate clients, has completed the deployment of Ciena's WaveLogic 5 Extreme (WL5e) solution. This was reported by the ComNews portal on June 29, 2020. According to the company, the modernization more than doubled the speed of connections that GlobalNet offers to customers and improved the efficiency of the entire flexible network.
The WL5e equipment is housed on the compact Ciena Waveserver 5 platform, optimized for 100GbE/400GbE client connections. The solution reportedly achieved industry-leading capacity on all network channels, including a 600 Gbps channel between Moscow and St. Petersburg and an 800 Gbps channel providing connections to data centers in St. Petersburg.
“The launch of 800Gbit/s will allow us to leverage industry-leading innovations to set new standards for GlobalNet's network performance. Our customers will gain access to the most advanced technology from Ciena. In today's dynamic world, it is essential to provide the capabilities needed to meet our customers' rapidly changing demands. With WaveLogic 5, we are implementing Russia's first 800G solution and strengthening our leadership in delivering the highest-performance optics on the market,” said Vladimir Vedeneev, Chief Technical Officer of GlobalNet.
Yaniv Hagadish, head of the EMEA region at Ciena, noted in turn: “Service providers around the world are looking for ways to reduce cost per bit and accelerate the delivery of new services. Ciena WaveLogic 5 will help GlobalNet take its place at the forefront of the industry by creating a more reliable and adaptive network capable of meeting customer requirements today and in the future.”
